Libyan Dictator Muammar Gaddafi Killed

After 42 years of ruling Libya, dictator Col Muammar Gaddafi was killed in crossfire after he was captured in his birthplace of Sirte. Images Of Muammar GaddafiActing PM Mahmoud Jibril said that Gaddafi was shot in head while during fire exchange between his loyalists and the fighters of National Transitional Council (NTC). Gaddafi succumbed to his injuries before reaching hospital. Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Nato Secretary General said that after 42 years, the Col Gaddafi’s fear rule has come to an end.

Following Gaddafi’s death, there were scenes of celebration in Libya which continued till late night in several towns and cities of the country. Video footage of Gaddafi’s last moments showed that the dictator emerging from a drain and “don’t shoot, don’t shoot” were his the last words. Video footage also suggests that he was hauled through the streets. Mr Jibril while speaking to the press said that forensic report concluded that colonel had died from bullet wounds which were inflicted upon him when he caught in crossfire between his forces and the revolutionaries.

According to TV footages of several Arabic channels, it was shown that troops were surrounding a couple of large drainage pipes where Gaddafi was found. US President Barack Obama hailed the day as “momentous” for Libya.  UK PM David Cameron said  that the day will be remembered by all those who fell victims to Gaddafi, while UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon said that the road ahead for Libya will be will difficult and full of challenges.

The death of Gaddafi came after weeks of gun battle to capture Sirte. China said that the death of Gaddafi is a turning point in the history of Libya while Russian President Dimitry Medvedev said that he hoped for a peaceful transition of Libya into a democratic state.
